Math TutoringAs a credentialed elementary school teacher in Massachusetts, Linda taught the 4th grade math curriculum there for several years as part of her teaching experience before she and her husband moved to California. Here she qualified for and obtained her California Clear Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. In teaching math to these younger students, Linda focuses on the basic math concepts for grades one through four—place value, basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as beginning fractions, time, and money. She believes that the most important approach to learning math is to know the “why” of it—to understand the concepts. Linda helps the students to learn to think about why they are doing something, not just doing the problems by “rote” to get the “right” answers. Learning math in this way builds a foundation that will take them through their future math courses as well. Another issue that many students have is not having mastered the basic math facts, particularly addition and multiplication. They still count on their fingers or use a chart. Mastery of these math facts frequently becomes part of her tutoring process for math. Because there are so many different math curriculums being used, Linda uses the student’s own textbook in order to prevent confusion. Then she goes at the student’s pace assigning homework problems as needed along the way. Parents are invited to arrange a free consultation with their student to talk about a possible plan and ask any additional questions. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
